Professor Jakša Barbić was born on 12 December 1936 in Zagreb. He attended primary school and II. Gymnasium in Zagreb.
After graduating from gymnasium (high school) he enrolled at the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb on 29 September 1955. He graduated from university on 29 January 1960.
After completing his studies he served in the army from 28 March 1960 until 12 February 1961.
He was employed as an intern at the County Court in Jastrebarsko from 1 March 1961. From 1 March 1962 he proceeded with his internship at the District Court in Zagreb where he stayed until 17 September 1962. He was then transferred to the High Commercial Court of Croatia in Zagreb. He passed the bar exam on 27 March 1963, and from 1 May 1963 he was employed as court clerk at the Municipal Court in Zagreb, but working at tje High Commercial Court of Croatia in Zagreb. He also passed the notary exam. He was employed as an assistant at the Law Faculty in Zagreb from 1 August of the same year.
He defended his doctoral dissertation entitled "Consulting Engineering Contract” before the commission of the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb on 27 April 1973, and on 24 May of the same year he was promoted to doctor of science in the field of commercial law.
In December 1973, he was elected assistant professor of "Commercial Law" and on 28 March 1978, associate professor. He was elected a full professor in the same subject on 28 February 1981. He was subsequently confirmed twice and then finally elected a full professor with tenure. In 2009, the University of Zagreb awarded him the title of professor emeritus.
He teaches at the Postgraduate Study in Commercial Law and Company Law at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb, and has also taught at other postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb, Split, Ljubljana, Maribor, Skopje, Belgrade and Novi Sad and at the Faculty of Economics in Zagreb.
In the academic years 1975/76 and 1976/77 he was vice-dean of the Faculty, and from 1981 to 1984 president of the Council. He was first elected dean of the Faculty for the academic years 1993/94 and 1994/95 and the second time for the academic years 1995/96 and 1996/97.
He conducted the Postgraduate Study in Commercial and Company Law at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb from 1 January 1985 until his retirement on 1 October 2007, with a break during his term as Dean. He was the head of the Department of Commercial and Company Law of the Law Faculty in Zagreb from 1981 until 2007. He introduced company law as a special branch of law into the Croatian legal system and legal education in Croatia.
He was elected an associate member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2002, and a full member in 2004. Since 2004, he has been the President of the then established Scientific Council for Public Administration, Judiciary and the Rule of Law of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and has organized 64 round tables on the most current social issues, of which he chaired 58 round tables. From 2006 to 2010, he was Deputy Secretary of the Department of Social Sciences, and from 2011 to 2018, Vice President of the Academy. Since 2019, he has been a member of the Presidency. Since 29 January 2021, he has been the head of the Adriatic Institute in Zagreb. At the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, he launched the book series Modernization of Law (Modernizacija prava), of which he is also the editor-in-chief. By 31 January 2021, 54 books had been published, of which 49 had been edited.
He is a full member and a member of the presidency of the Croatian Academy of Legal Sciences.
He is the winner of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts Award for 2003, for "Company Law", Books I, II and III for a scientific contribution of lasting value for the Republic of Croatia.
He constantly cooperated with the High Commercial Court of Croatia in Zagreb as an occasional judge (later a lay judge) and subsequently with the High Commercial Court of the Republic of Croatia in Zagreb. He won the Award for contribution to the development and operation of the commercial judiciary in 1979 and 2013 for long-term successful cooperation with the High Commercial Court of the Republic of Croatia. He is an honorary member of the Croatian Association of Judges. He also received recognition from the then Zagreb Chamber of Commerce with a plaque.
From 2004 to 2008, he was Vice President of the Presidency, and subsequently until 2017 a member of the Presidency of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Croatian Chamber of Commerce in Zagreb; from 2017 he is an honorary member of the Presidency. He is the arbitrator of that arbitration. So far, he has arbitrated in numerous arbitration disputes in domestic and international commercial arbitrations in the country and in leading arbitration centres abroad, as well as in UNCITRAL arbitration. He has arbitrated in Paris, London, The Hague, Zurich, Geneva, Stockholm, Vienna, Graz, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Belgrade. Since 1999, he has been on the list of arbitrators of the prestigious International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes in Washington (ICSID), where he has also arbitrated.
In one term he was a member of the Legal Council of the Parliament of the Socialist Republic of Croatia. From 1981 to 2017 he was the president of the professional association of lawyers in business (from 1981 to 1985 the President of the Croatian Association of Lawyers in Business, from 1985 to 1990 the President of the Presidency of the Yugoslavian Association of Lawyers in Business, from 1991 to 2017 the President of the Croatian Association of Lawyers in Business).
Since its founding, i.e. since 1993, he has been the president of the Zagreb Lawyers' Club. He organized and until June 2017 led 214 regular monthly forums of the Club, which continue. He initiated and edited the permanent Bulletin of the Forum and the publication of the Yearbook of the Forum. He was the editor of the Forum Yearbook in the first 15 volumes.
He was a longtime member of the editorial board of the magazine "Privreda i pravo" (now "Pravo u gospodarstvu"), a member of the editorial board of the Collected Papers of Zagreb Law Faculty, chairman of the publishing committee of the following journals: "Hrvatska pravna revija", “Zakonitost”, "Pravo i porezi" and of the magazine "Novi informator".
He has organized and / or led and / or participated with papers at more than 400 scientific and professional conferences, seminars, forums, round tables in the country and abroad, and held numerous public lectures.
He was a member of the National Science Council. He is a scientific advisor to the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Croatia. He was also a state advisor in the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Croatia. From 2007 to 2010, he was a member of the Advisory Council of the Judicial Academy. He is a member of the expert council of the Croatian Notary Academy, and was a member of the Advisory Board of the former Export and Investment Promotion Agency. Since 2012, he has been a member of the Executive Board of the Croatian National Board of the International Chamber of Commerce - ICC Croatia. Since 2010 he has been a member of the board of the Dr. Jadranko Crnić Foundation. He has been a member of the board of commissioners of the Marija and Mirjan Damaška Foundation since its establishment. Since 2019, he has been a member of the board of directors of the Foundation of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
He won the state award for science in 2006 for the work Company Law, Book II - Capital Companies, Zagreb, 2005, third amended edition. In 2005, the Croatian Association of Managers and Entrepreneurs - CROMA awarded him the Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2009, the Board of Directors of the Croatian Chamber of Notaries awarded him a plaque for his exceptional contribution to the notary service in the Republic of Croatia. In 2011, the Croatian Chamber of Commerce awarded him the golden kuna for a lifetime's work, for his exceptional contribution to the development of the Croatian economy. The Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Croatian Chamber of Commerce awarded him in 2017 in gratitude for his contribution to the functioning of the Court. In 2018, the Croatian Radio Forum, HUP - Coordination of Commercial Radio Stations and Media Servis Global awarded him a special "Nikola Tesla" award for his exceptional contribution to the success of the 1st Croatian Radio Forum held on the occasion of World Radio Day 2018.
For merits in science, he was awarded the Order of Danica Hrvatska with the figure of Ruđer Bošković.

Božena Bulum

Božena Bulum was born in Split in 1978. In 2000, she graduated from the Faculty of Law, University of Split. In 2003, she passed the Bar Exam.
She gained her LL.M. in 2005 (thesis: "Time charter in modern maritime practice"), and her Ph.D. in 2008 (thesis: "Regulation of maritime transport services and access to port services market in the competition law of the European Union") from the Faculty of Law in Split. Between June 2001 and January 2004, she worked at the Commercial Court in Split.
In January 2005, she started working at the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Croatia. There she stayed until February 2006, when she started working at the Adriatic Institute of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Today, she holds the position of scientific advisor at the Institute.
In 1998, 1999 and 2000, she won the University of Split scholarship; and in 2000, she won the scholarship of the Foundation 'Zlatko Crnić'. In 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000, she won the rewards of the Dean of the Faculty of Law in Split. She is a regular speaker at international and Croatian conferences related to maritime law She took part in the organisation of several academic seminars and conferences.
She has participated as researcher on scientific projects financed by the Ministry of Science and Croatian Science Foundation. Božena Bulum is a board member of the Croatian Maritime Law Association; Portius (International Legal Centre for Port Law, since 2008); the Expert Committee for the Croatian Maritime Code Amendments (2011, 2013, 2015 and 2019) and of the Expert Committee for the Maritime Domain and Seaports Act Amendments (2019). She has published one academic monograph, several book chapters and number of academic papers.
